The New York Times bestselling author of Foodheim returns to slide into red leather booths across the country in search of the ultimate expression of a beloved American icon: the steak house.
This fall, New York Times bestselling author Eric Wareheim releases Steak House: The People, the Places, the Recipes (Ten Speed Press | on sale 10/14/25). In the follow up to his debut book, Foodheim, Wareheim slides into red leather booths across the country in search of the ultimate expression of a beloved American icon: the steak house. Steak House features 45 of the best, most decadent recipes accompanied by 125 glorious images of the food, the restaurants—and most importantly—the people behind them.
A love letter to the great American steak house in its many regional iterations, Steak House will transport you into some of the most storied dining rooms across the country. Get an inside look at Southern institutions like Beef ‘N Bottle in Charlotte, NC or Bern’s in Tampa, FL, then jump north to New York City to dine under the churchwarden pipe-lined ceilings of Keens and hear from a veteran server at Peter Luger's. Head to the south-west to Little Red Barn in San Antonio, TX, then to the north-west to Acropolis in Portland, OR—Greek-inflected establishment serving some of the best steak bites in town that also happens to be a strip club. In Los Angeles, CA, go old-school at The Musso & Frank Grill, or new school at Majordomo. In Las Vegas, NV, go big at Golden Steer.
Together with co-author Gabe Ulla and photographer Marcus Nilsson, Wareheim captures the regional character, quirks, and patrons that have turned these steak houses into beloved stalwarts. After taking in the people and the places, dive into recipes for steak house standards at home, like Rib Eye with Roasted Garlic, Classic Prime Rib, Thick and Thin Onion Rings, and Creamed Spinach. Or go for newer additions like Pollo Asado and Chicken-Fried Ibérico Pork Steak. Round out your decadent meal with desserts like Espresso Martini Baked Alaska, Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce, or Apple Strudel Mit Schlag.
With original contributions and guest appearances from friends including T-Pain, Bob Odenkirk, John C. Reilly, and more, Wareheim uncovers why a steak house's hospitality remains unmatched and transports you to a night of revelry and good fun—whether dining in or out. In his words:
“It’s a kinder dimension, a universe where the portions are always generous—and sometimes friggin’ huge—the chairs are the type you can sink into for hours, and the volume on everything worldly that might be worrying you has a way of magically getting muted.”
