Equanimity and Compassion: Cultivating Stability and Heart in a Ceaselessly Changing World
A Daylong Retreat with Susie Harrington
Sunday, December 14 from 10:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. IN PERSON
Each day, like every tree in the world, we reach our roots into the stability of the ground that holds us, and stretch our arms into the world all around. Our practice offers us the opportunity to cultivate resilience, capacity, peace and ease, as we steady ourselves in the challenges that are present with each day. Our practice also offers us the opportunity to be touched by the world and to care for the world—for our compassionate hearts to meet the conditions as they unfold. We live in increasingly unpredictable and unknown shared conditions, and together we can cultivate the resources to find grace and kindness and capacity to meet the suffering in these times. We can take each day as an opportunity to go through the fire of the difficult and stay open to the love and joy of an open heart. During this daylong retreat, we will explore holding both equanimity and compassion as we meet both our individual, as well as our collective, daily challenges in a wildly changing world. There will be guided meditations, quiet, sitting, walking meditation, opportunity for Dharma discussion and Dharma talk offerings. All are welcome!
COST: The Dharma Center operates on the gift economy and the cost of the daylong is on a two-part sliding scale. The fee that you offer through the registration system ($50, $70, $89, or $108 or scholarship options of $25 or $10) supports our non-profit, which pays the costs of the website, administration, building, etc. In keeping with our 2,600-year-old tradition, the teacher of the retreat is not compensated but rather shares the teachings freely. In turn, you are invited into the practice of dana, or generosity, a gift economy system that has been alive since the time of the Buddha. At the end, you are invited to make a donation to support the teacher in continuing their valuable work. Donations in any amount whatsoever are gratefully received, and the practice of generosity is always elective.
DATE: Sunday, December 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
QUESTIONS: Please email Laura at [email protected] or call 970-426-8983 with any questions.
LOCATION: Durango Dharma Center, 1800 E 3rd Ave, Ste 109 in Durango
ABOUT SUSIE HARRINGTON: Susie Harrington teaches meditation internationally and is the guiding teacher for Desert Dharma, which serves many communities in the Southwest near her home in Moab, Utah. She has trained in the Insight tradition since 1989, and in 2005 was invited into teaching by Jack Kornfield, Joseph Goldstein and Guy Armstrong. Her teaching is deeply grounded in the body and often emphasizes the expression of mindfulness in speech and daily life. Susie brings the skills of inquiry, relational Dharma and the psychological/spiritual interface from her training in Hakomi Therapy and the Diamond Approach. Believing nature to be a profound teacher and a gateway to our true self, she often offers retreats outside. For more information on Susie Harrington, see: desertdharma.org.
