About this Event
As African American Studies programs at institutions of higher learning are currently being targeted for closure around the country, the “Epicenter” documentary takes an in-depth look into the hard fought struggles to bring these programs to the Bay Area communities of Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco.
The documentary focuses on the untold stories from the voices of several key organizers of the strikes and protests at Merritt College, Berkeley High School, San Francisco State College, and UC Berkeley.
ROBERT MCKNIGHT
The Epicenter screening event will pay special tribute to longtime Berkeley High teacher and Black Studies Department Chair Robert McKnight, who is currently facing serious health challenges. McKnight, who is heavily featured in the documentary, attended both Merritt College and San Francisco State Collge, and helped tremendously with the conceptualization of this compelling educational/historical film project.
ABOUT THE FILMMAKERS
The Epicenter documentary was produced and directed by the filmmaking team of Doug and Douglas Harris Jr, who have produced several acclaimed PBS documentaries that have explored the lives of prominent African American figures from the Berkeley community. Doug Harris, a 1978 graduate of Berkeley High, has been producing award winning documentaries dating back to 1999.
