As the Town of Cheraw gears up to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Lafayette's arrival to Cheraw, the Cheraw Arts Commission would like to invite you to partake in dancing lessons!
As part of the correlating events celebrating the 200th anniversary of General Marquis de Lafayette’s visit to Cheraw in 1825, the Cheraw Arts Commission invites the public to participate in English Country Dance instruction.
The Regency era dance workshop will be held on Saturday, February 22 at Kevin Lear’s on Main- 140 Second Street in Cheraw, SC. “Mr. Charles Steplively” of Virginia will lead the workshop with Syllabub musicians from NC providing music.
English country dancing is a traditional form of dance popular in the 18th and 19th centuries that incorporates many dancers much like today’s line- dancing. “Mr. Charles Steplively” has been providing his unique manner of Country Dance instruction, whilst delighting audiences with his scintillating humor, for over a dozen years.
As a choreographer he has set authentic Renaissance dances for productions of The Merry Wives of Windsor and Romeo and Juliet, and Regency dances for productions of Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility. He is currently serving as dance advisor to members of the American Friends of Lafayette Music Committee concomitant to engagements as Dancemaster along the Lafayette Bicentennial tour.
There will be 2 sessions of dance instruction. The first session 12noon-1pm is appropriate for families and children ages 1st-5th grades. Adults and students (6th grade & up) can participate at the 1:30-3:30pm session. The sessions are free and open to families, groups and individuals.
Costumes of the period are optional, but good fitting shoes are certainly recommended.
