About this Event

Pioneer Works is excited to present the opening night of the 15th Annual Ende Tymes Festival of Noise and Sonic Liberation, featuring performances by Aaron Dilloway, The Rita, Spiteful Womb, Charmaine Lee, Valise.

The Ende Tymes Festival of Noise and Sonic Liberation was founded in 2011 in the wake of Fukushima, and returns for its 15th edition in today's frozen/burning/fascist apocalypse.  On the opening night on April 10 Ende Tymes presents 5 treasured artists from the heights and depths of noise exploration.  AARON DILLOWAY returns to Pioneer Works with his michelin star tape machines running more powerful than ever.  THE RITA will present their premiere presentation as a trio, featuring 2 pantomimes alongside Sam McKinley's longstanding research into visceral music.  SPITEFUL WOMB, CHARMAINE LEE, and VALISE support

Aaron Dilloway is one of the most creative, prolific, and revered figures in the Midwest American experimental/noise scene. His performances and recordings incorporate rhythmic loops from eight-track tapes, vocal improvisations, found sounds, and field recordings. He uses contact microphones in order to generate harsh, feedback-laced noises, sometimes placing microphones inside his mouth in order to create bizarre, ogre-like distorted voices. While he channels some dark, violent energies into his sonic constructions, there's also a crucial element of playful, absurdist humor to his work, making his performances confusing yet highly enjoyable spectacles of Dadaist performance art. While Dilloway is perhaps best known for his involvement with Michigan noise group Wolf Eyes, he's had an extensive solo career, issuing hundreds of recordings under his own name as well as Spine Scavenger. He's collaborated and issued split releases with other well-known noise and experimental artists such as Kevin Drumm, Prurient, John Wiese, Lucrecia Dalt, Body/Head, and many others. Dilloway is also the owner of Hanson Records, a long-running experimental music label as well as a brick-and-mortar record store and mail-order service based in Oberlin, Ohio.

The Rita

Pantomime harsh sound fueled by the audio and aesthetics of stage makeup, pointed toe stiletto heels, convertible tights, shark attack injuries, ballet injuries, 500cc two stroke motocross engines, WWII fighter armament. Various obsessions have guided the Canadian harsh noise project The Rita into different paths of rough, abrasive and textural constructions of live and recorded sound since 1996. From genre cinema sound sources, to cage diving with great white sharks, to women's nylons, the various deconstructed elements of the live and pre-recorded sources lead to a heavily directed and immersive listening experience. Over the last five years, physical elements of the classical ballet have acted as a culmination of obsessions for THE RITA as the project continues to grow via sound with pantomime and neoclassical ballet during international stage performances and the recording for a myriad of LP, CD and tape releases for various record labels.

Spiteful Womb (est. 2014) is the noise/power electronics project of Nora Zimmerman, based in eastern Pennsylvania, exploring the liminal space between life and death, in a visceral as well as a spiritual sense.

Charmaine Lee (b. 1991) is an Australian vocalist based in New York. Using the voice, feedback, and live processing, Lee's practice is primarily concerned with risk-taking, playfulness, and improvisation. Her long running collaborators include Ikue Mori and Conrad Tao. Lee runs a record label, Kou Records, dedicated to pioneering artists in music and sound.

Valise is a project of Brooklyn based intermedia artist Maralie Armstrong-Rial. VALISE speaks & dances with itself, transposes ancient star data into video song, and listens for ecstatic energies. Maralie also performs with poet & musician Eli V Manuscript as Humanbeast. Between these projects Maralie has collaborated with The Body, Drew McDowall, Wolf Eyes, Early Shinada, Carlos Gonzalez, Work/Death, Sofia Reta, sang with the Assembly of Light Choir and had the opportunity to dance for Sigrid Lauren and Nick Cave (Soundsuits). Recordings as VALISE have been published by Primitive Languages, No Rent Records, Angiosse, Dead Gods, and Hot Releases.
