About this Event
The Empty Closet is an LGBTQ+ historic news and literary publicationbased in Rochester, New York. Established in 1971 by the University of Rochester’s Gay Liberation Front, it is the oldest continually published LGBTQ+ newspaper in New York State and one of the oldest in the United States!
Rochester Rainbow Union, started in 1970, is one of America’s oldest rainbow community organizations, and Rochester’s free rainbow community space. We house New York State’s oldest and largest circulating rainbow archive—the Lilac Library, with over 11,000 unique items, and operate the Rochester LGBTQIA+ Community Council, brining 20 leaders and organizations together for coordination and strategic planning. Our community magazine—the Empty Closet—is one of America’s oldest rainbow periodicals, and we showcase local artists in our community art Gallery Q.
