Why Breast Screening is Important for Black Women

Breast cancer impacts Black women differently—and early detection saves lives.

  • Black women are more likely to be diagnosed at younger ages.
  • Black women are disproportionately affected by aggressive subtypes of breast cancer.
  • Mortality rates remain higher due to later-stage diagnosis and barriers to timely care.

Take Action Today! Don’t wait for symptoms—get screened, know your risks, and spread the word!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Although it is not mandatory, if you have a health card please bring it if you are interested in the screening mammogram or cervical screening (HPV/pap test) that is being offered during the event.

Mammogram Screening

Individuals who are between 40-74 years of age can self-refer and enroll in the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) where screening mammograms typically are performed every 1 to 2 years. Visit CheckForBreastCancer.ca for more information on OBSP.

If you are outside of this age group and would like a mammogram, a healthcare provider onsite will be there to help assess if this is right for you.

Cervical Screening

Individuals who are between 25-69 may be eligible through the Ontario Cervical Screening Program (OCSP), where screenings typically are performed every 3 to 5 years. Visit CheckforCervicalCancer.ca for more information on OCSP.
