About this Event
Empower x Beat the Block Self-Identity Workshop
Empower Week: Thursday 5th March, 6-7.30pm
Location: David Ross Sports Village (Conference Room)
Beat The Block CIC is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to empowering underrepresented women and girls to reach their potential through education, exposure, and sport. We create safe and inclusive spaces where women and young people can thrive, breaking down the internal and external barriers that limit participation, confidence, and ambition.
This interactive workshop will be led by Naomi Bedeau, professional international footballer, activist, and University of Nottingham mathematics graduate. Naomi founded Beat The Block in 2025, drawing on her lived experience navigating the barriers faced by a Black, LGBTQ+, working-class woman in elite sport and education. Her journey informs the workshop and provides participants with authentic and relatable perspectives on identity, belonging, and inclusion in sport.
Through discussion, reflection, and interactive activities, participants will explore the barriers that prevent women from engaging in sport. The session encourages women to share their experiences and helps the university identify ways to create more inclusive and welcoming spaces that support regular participation.
