About this Event
Emperor is a Norwegian black metal band formed in 1991 in Oslo, Norway, widely regarded as one of the most influential and pioneering acts in the second wave of black metal. The band was founded by Ihsahn (Vegard Sverre Tveitan) on guitar and vocals, alongside Samoth (Tomas Thormodsæter Haugen) on guitar, and later joined by drummer Trym Torson. Emperor emerged from the Norwegian underground scene at a time when black metal was defined by raw production, aggressive riffing, and a dark, theatrical aesthetic. From the start, they distinguished themselves by incorporating symphonic and atmospheric elements, layering keyboards and complex song structures over traditional black metal intensity.
The band’s breakthrough came with their debut full-length album, In the Nightside Eclipse (1994), which is widely considered a landmark in black metal history. The album combined blistering speed, tremolo-picked riffs, and haunting keyboard arrangements, influencing countless bands in the extreme metal scene. Subsequent releases like Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk and IX Equilibrium further solidified Emperor’s reputation for technical mastery, compositional ambition, and a willingness to blend brutality with melodic and symphonic sophistication.
Career highlights for Emperor include pioneering the symphonic black metal subgenre, achieving international acclaim within the extreme metal community, and maintaining a lasting influence despite periods of inactivity. The band has performed at major festivals worldwide, inspired numerous contemporary metal acts, and earned recognition for their innovative approach to extreme music. Known for combining ferocious intensity with melodic and atmospheric depth, Emperor remains a defining figure in black metal and one of Norway’s most celebrated musical exports.
