The Emily Carr String Quartet Society is proud to present Music InsideOUT: Dvořák

Investigate Antonin Dvořák with a morning of music and insight into Dvořák's String Quintet no.3 in E flat major, op 97.

Tea, coffee, and snacks will be served followed by discussion, analysis, and a full performance of the string quintet.

This concert will feature a talented artist from the ECSQ's eighth annual Young Artist Mentorship Program, Walter Rees (viola) along with, host, Robert Holliston and the Emily Carr String Quartet.

Seventeen-year-old Walter Rees has been playing the violin for 13 years and the viola for 2 years, studying the last four with Müge Büyükçelen at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. A graduate of the Gary Karr Young Artists Performance Academy, Walter has received the Orval and Blanche Beatty Chamber Music Scholarship and the Katarina Gurska Scholarship Prize for composition. He has won the 'Spark to Flame' competition at the VCM (2023 and 2026) and was also the winner of the Louis Sherman Concerto competition in 2025 performing with the Victoria Chamber Orchestra.

Robert Holliston, host, an accomplished accompanist and chamber player, has performed throughout Canada, the USA, England, New Zealand, and has been heard frequently on CBC-Radio. A popular public speaker, Robert has given pre-performance lectures for Pacific Opera Victoria since 1993 and is POV’s Principal Coach. Robert is currently Head of Keyboard at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, where he also teaches piano and music history, and acts as vocal coach. Robert was a founding director of the VCM Opera Studio.

Formed in 2006 by members of the Victoria Symphony, the Emily Carr String Quartet has established itself as one of British Columbia’s finest chamber music ensembles renowned for its passionate and inspiring performances. They have participated in residencies at Stanford University and the Banff Centre and have collaborated and recorded with such artists as: the Lafayette String Quartet, Lorraine Min, Marion Newman, Jamie Parker and Arthur Rowe.

The quartet has been presented by numerous concert events such as the International Society for Contemporary Music's 2017 World Music Days, Music in the Morning and Music on Main concert series in Vancouver, the Ankara Music Festival in Turkey, Hornby Festival and the Victoria Summer Music Festival.
