Join us to celebrate Prof Tim Olds receiving his Emeritus Professorship and hear what he has to say about his years of academic experience.
About this Event

One of the rare benefits of age is the right — even the responsibility — to tell younger people about the traps and perils of their future careers. Having made all the mistakes, Tim Olds is prognosticating about threats to the future of the Academy. From social activism to epistemic relativism, from hyperspecialisation to ... well, you'll have to wait and see, Tim describes ways in which academia can go badly, badly astray. He's telling you so that you won't go wrong.
At this event we will also congratulate our Higher Degree by Research graduands who will have their awards conferred at the graduation ceremony earlier that day. Following Prof Olds' lecture, stay on for drinks, nibbles and networking.

Professor Tim Olds was conferred as one of the inaugural Distinguished Professors at UniSA in 2021. The Bradley Distinguished Professor is conferred only to those who are leaders in their field and have international reach and leadership, as s well as meet the core attributes of UniSA and provide support and service to the UniSA mission. Professor Olds has an international reputation for outstanding research and identification as a researcher of global impact.

Prof Olds initiated, and led for many years, the research group Health and Use of Time (HUT) within the recognised UniSA Research Centre “ARENA”. He is the Inaugural President of the International Society of Time-Use Epidemiologists (INTUE) and spearheads collaborations internationally for his research team. An example of the success of this team is the International Society for Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity Commendation for Research Excellence (with Carol Maher, Ron Plotnikoff, Corneel Vandelanotte, Ilea Sanders, Celine Northcott, Jill Ryan, Sarah Edney & Rachel Curtis) in 2020. He led the Australian arm of the 12-nation ISCOLE study, and the Australian group in the 39-nation Active Healthy Kids Global Network.

Prof Olds has ensured his seminal work reaches a wider audience than academic publications alone. He has been a highly read author in The Conversation (14 articles) and is a regular media commentator, averaging over a million media hits a year. He was UniSA’s Media Communicator of the Year in 2012. He is a paid contributor to New Philosopher magazine (4 articles), and was a regular columnist with Australasian Science for 10 years until 2015.
