Rachel Rogers and Ruth Alborough will discuss intensive therapy, including their delivery, preparation and the differences to 1:1 EMDR.
About this Event

Welcome to the Yorkshire region EMDR event focused on EMDR and Intensive Trauma Therapy. Join us at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Leeds City Centre for an insightful session delivered by Rachel Rogers and Ruth Alborough.

Intensive trauma therapy, with its extensive evidence base, is a very effective way of treating C/PTSD. However, here in the UK intensives are not commonplace and the approach is met with intrigue.

This session will look to address some of the most commonly asked questions such as:

How can intensives be delivered?

What makes a suitable client?

The differences between 1-1 delivery and therapist rotation?

What about preparation, stabilisation and how it fits with standard protocol?

The day will be interactive and hands on, drawing on different lived experiences of jumping in at the intensives deep end.

Event Aims and Objectives

To be inclusive and take account of EDI issues.

To provide an overview of intensive approaches.

To provide an overview of client suitability.

To explore therapist rotation vs individual working.

To share practical, lived experiences of intensives.

To increase practitioners’ understanding of ways to deliver intensives practically and safely.

Rachel Rogers

Rachel is an accredited integrative practitioner with over twenty years clinical experience and an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society. Her PhD is in Police Mental health (due December 2024) and her professional background spans mainstream and charitable sectors predominantly focusing on occupational trauma.

Rachel first started working with intensive approaches in 2016 within a police treatment setting, adding trauma therapy to this in 2017. Inspired by the positive outcomes of PSYTREC’s residential intensive trauma treatment models in the Netherlands, Rachel trained with Dr Suzy Matthijssen and led an equivalent residential for CPTSD affected UK police officers over a two-year period. She presented the outcomes of her 2022 service evaluation at the EMDR UK annual conference this year.

As the Director of Phoenix Trauma Solutions CIC, Rachel now works across all first responder disciplines to provide timely and service appropriate support to those presenting with layers of frontline traumatic experiences.

As a firm advocate of intensive approaches, Rachel is keen to increase therapists’ understandings and confidence in working in this highly effective way.

Ruth Alborough

Ruth is an accredited EMDR and integrative relational practitioner, and supervisor. Ruth’s experience spans service delivery and management in charities and public sector environments, and she now integrates parts work, Somatic Trauma Therapy and attachment informed approaches into her successful private practice. She works regularly with police responders and staff online and in person alongside other clients with complex trauma presentations.

Ruth heard about the intensive trauma pilot and visited the Harrogate Police Treatment

Centre to see what it was all about due to curiosity and the possibility of a new, exciting

challenge to her usual EMDR practice.

Despite some initial reservations about the fast pace, likely impact on therapeutic connection, and lack of experience with the more CBT based elements, she found her

first two-week intensive life changing, incredibly moving, fulfilling and hugely confidence boosting. She has now completed four such intensives and is passionate about doing more, and building on the highly successful model to further meet the specialist needs of emergency responders.
