Embodiment Practices for Body ImageBrit Guerin (she/they) has taught Embodiment Practices on and off for the past year to experiment with what resonated with participants. They believe Embodiment Practices can be beneficial for everyone, but they want to create a more focused space of shared experience. She is excited to offer Embodiment Practices as a small group series to focus on body image challenges.
In a society that idealizes thinness as not only “beautiful” but also “healthy,” many of us struggle with body image. Diet culture teaches us at a very early age that being thin is better and morally superior to larger bodies. While folks in larger bodies are impacted to a greater extent, everyone is harmed by diet culture. As Brit learned in Embodied Recovery in Eating Disorders, the way to heal from body image challenges is to become more embodied. The more that we can turn away from our body as an object and towards our body as an experience, the more neutral and even peaceful we will feel towards our body.
So, what is embodiment? One way to describe embodiment is where our consciousness and our body intersect. When we feel as though there is something wrong with our body, our bodies become a place of fear. As a coping strategy, we will disconnect from our body as an attempt to reduce distress. We might even focus on changing our bodies (i.e. trying to lose weight) to try to improve our body image. Brit believes that body image cannot be healed by changing our physical body. Instead, embodiment is the path to healing.
This series will include gentle movement and other experiential practices to explore curiosity and connection to our body. This will be a closed group with the same participants each week to foster as much familiarity and safety as possible. As mentioned above, people in larger bodies face additional challenges due to anti-fat bias. While this group is open to all size bodies, we will be sure to acknowledge varying levels of privilege and discrimination that come with our identities and bodies.
