About this Event

This one-day, online workshop allows educators to develop a greater understanding of the knowledge systems that help to shape the cultural lens of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Providing educators with the skills to authentically embed First Nations perspectives into their teaching, this professional learning opportunity allows participants to develop teaching and learning content that is reflective of First Nations peoples' histories and cultures. After all, Indigenous Australian students must be able to see the representation of their rich cultures in their classrooms. Delivered by Deb Belyea, a proud Torres Strait Islander woman, and experienced senior teacher, this workshop provides teachers with Culturally Responsive Teaching approaches, such as: 8 Ways of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Learning and the Interconnectedness Framework.


This is 6-hour Professional Development Workshop is presented in 3 sessions:

Session 1

◦ Indigenous Knowledge Systems: An introduction to First Nations People's cultural lens and Cultural Protocols;

◦ The importance of Culturally Responsive Teaching and the inclusion of First Nations

◦ Perspectives.

such as: 8 Ways of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Learning and the Interconnectedness Framework.

Session 2

An introduction to Culturally Responsive

Pedagogical Approaches:

◦ 8 Ways of Learning

Interconnectedness: a holistic framework.

Session 3

Putting theory to work:

◦ Planning session using Australian Curriculum V9.


The workshop:

◦ is aimed at Primary and Secondary teachers, Curriculum Leaders and Indigenous Australian Education Employees (such as Community Education Counsellors or Teacher's Aides);

◦ will cover the Australian Institute for Teaching and School

◦ Leadership Professional Teaching Standards 1.4 and 2.4 for educators, as well as 6.1, 6.2 and 7.4 for educational leaders;

◦ assists staff to attend to their Cultural Responsiveness, after having completed the AITSL Indigenous Cultural Responsiveness Self-Reflection Tool;

◦ and provides up-to-date Indigenous Australian content add to participants' ongoing cultural currency.
