About this Event
This event will feature ANUNĀD, a new piece created by Spanish dancer Elvi Balboa in collaboration with Moveius Contemporary Ballet. The work will be performed by Moveius' dancers at the Spanish Cultural Center.
ANUNĀD
ANUNĀD, from the Sanskrit word meaning resonance and reverberation, is Elvi Balboa’s new group creation following her acclaimed work ANÖA. The piece deepens her exploration of how body, sound, and light can act as architectural forces, transforming space into an immersive environment.
Choreography unfolds through canons, shifting spatial patterns, and collective dynamics that envision the dancers as a single, pulsating organism. Moving between cycles of repetition, accumulation, and release, the performers generate landscapes of intensity that blur the boundary between physical tension and emotional resonance. Audiences are invited into an experience that is at once architectural and visceral.
Elvi Balboa
Elvi Balboa articulates an artistic proposal in which the body emerges as a territory for critical and multisensory exploration. In dialogue with electronic music and science fiction, her multidisciplinary work challenges conventional notions of movement, integrating architecture and soundscapes that expand the boundaries of perception. From an installation-based approach, Balboa positions the body not only as a means of expression but also as an agent of inquiry: a catalyst that strains the relationship between identity, collectivity, and environment. Her pieces invite audiences into profound and immersive experiences, where each movement unveils narratives of belonging and transformation.
Recent projects include AM I WHAT? (2020), NASENDA (2022), KNIFELIKE (2022, with Ignacio Jiménez, selected in the Paraíso Residencies), and ANÖA, co-produced by the Galician Choreography Centre (2024). In 2025 she premiered BAUNSBAK at Escenas do Cambio (Santiago de Compostela), a piece combining amplified jumping boots, installation, and electronic music. Balboa is also collaborating with Moveius Contemporary Ballet (Washington DC) and is the co-founder of SØMOS, a collective dedicated to immersive installations and original soundtracks.
Moveius Contemporary Ballet
Founded in 2010 by Diana Movius, Moveius Contemporary Ballet is a Washington, D.C.-based company that aims to expand access to dance and the performing arts. The company creates work that lives at the intersection of policy and performance, confronting contemporary social issues through movement. By amplifying diverse voices and sharing human stories, their mission is to inspire audiences and incite conversation.
Recognizing a city-wide need for affordable rehearsal and performance spaces, the company expanded its mission in 2015 by founding Dance Loft on 14. This trailblazing arts facility provides a home for Moveius' professional company while also serving as a vibrant community hub. It nurtures the D.C. arts ecosystem by offering dance and movement classes, providing affordable space for choreographers to create, and presenting high-quality performances, particularly for residents of the 14th Street Heights neighborhood in Ward 4. In essence, Moveius functions as both a professional ballet company and a vital community-focused arts institution.
