About this Event

Course Overview

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to electrical system design, tailored for mechanically oriented individuals such as engineers, technicians, and those seeking cross-training in multiple domains. It covers essential components, fundamental calculations, system architecture, and routed system design.

Participants will start by learning about key electrical components and their functions, followed by the necessary calculations to understand electrical behavior. The curriculum then delves into the design and architecture of electrical systems, with a special focus on mobile machinery. The course concludes with an in-depth look at routed system design, including wire selection, connectors, and environmental considerations.

An optional capstone project offers participants the chance to apply their knowledge practically. By the end of the course, participants will have a solid foundation in electrical systems, preparing them for practical applications in various fields.

Learning Objectives

• What are the fundamental components of an electrical system, and what are their mechanical system equivalents?

• How can electrical systems be mathematically modeled? How can we determine electrical power production, consumption, and system efficiency?

• How do the purpose and utilization of a machine influence its system design?

• How does high-level system design affect the design of routed systems?

• What are the major sub-systems in off-highway machine designs?

• What key factors should be considered when specifying cables and connectors?

• What is the primary purpose of cable shielding?

• What is the SAE J1939 standard, and why is it crucial for off-highway machine design?

• What are the major electrical failure modes, their causes, and how can they be prevented?

Prerequisites

This is an entry level technical course which includes equations which need to be solved with algebra. Individuals with some prior experience in electrical system design may find this course easier but there is something for everyone to learn.
