Electric Rose: The Rosa Cohen ExperienceIlya Shneyveys and Sarah Myerson present “Electric Rose: The Rosa Cohen Experience.'' Born in 19th century Kyiv (Ukraine), Rosa Cohen brought her family’s unique repertoire of Yiddish ballads, Hebrew prayers and Slavic folk songs to the New World, where she was interviewed and recorded by Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett in the 1970s. Sarah’s and Ilya’s wildly electric multi-instrumental arrangements re-imagine these stories of love and loss, work and immigration in exciting and unexpected new ways.

About the artists:
Sarah Myerson is an ordained cantor actively working to connect egalitarian Jewish religious with secular/cultural Yiddish communities. Currently living in Brooklyn, she has studied Yiddish language in New York and Israel. She has taught Yiddish song workshops with Ethel Raim and others in the USA and Europe, and coaches private students. She writes and performs new compositions, for example with Jewish spiritual music duo Shekedina, and freelances as a musician, speaker, educator and Yiddish dance teacher and leader. www.cantorsarahmyerson.com
Brooklyn-based Ilya Shneyveys is a multi-instrumentalist, teacher, composer, arranger and producer of contemporary Jewish music, ranging from klezmer and Yiddish folk song to fusion and experimental projects. A founding member of Shtetl Berlin, and long-time faculty at Yiddish Summer Weimar, Ilya performs and teaches regularly at major international festivals. The Latvian native is a founding member of Yiddish psychedelic rock band Forshpil, Yiddish-Bavarian fusion project Alpen Klezmer and Jewish spiritual music duo Shekedina. An artistic director of the Caravan Orchestra, he has collaborated with Dobranotch, the Klezmatics, Michael Winograd and many others. www.ilya.shneyveys.com
