When Eleanor Hamby and Dr. Sandra Hazelip met more than 25 years ago, after becoming empty-nesters and then widows, it was best friends at first sight. They never could’ve imagined that their relationship would propel them—in their 80s—through an around-the-globe adventure, or that they would go viral on-line and inspire people young and old, across cultures. With a lean budget and ambitious destinations on their bucket list, the irresistible friends—who have become known on social media as the travelling nanas—shared adventures that transformed their outlooks, galvanized and deepened their friendship and their faith, and taught them to live fearlessly.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS: Ellie Hamby, from Abilene, Texas, works with Zambia Mission and directs the Zambia Medical Mission. Sandy Hazelip, from Eastland, Texas, recently retired after 40 years as a physician, specializing in geriatrics.
At age 81, these two adventurous octogenarians took an around-the-world journey in just 80 days—a personal adventure between friends that unexpectedly put them on the map. They weren’t chasing fame, but the spotlight found them when their contagious
message of positivity, friendship, and fearless living at any age resonated deeply and spread organically across social and traditional media.
Affectionately dubbed the TikTok “traveling nanas,” Ellie and Sandy now inspire people across generations—young and old alike—and across social, political, and cultural divides throughout the United States and around the world.
They co-authored the book Here We Go and have shared their story through speaking
engagements both nationally and internationally. Widowed more than 20 years ago, they became close friends after the age of 60 and have continued to say “yes” to life together.
Over the years, they’ve also taken grandchildren along on mission trips and other adventures, passing on a legacy of curiosity, courage, faith, and service.
