Dancer-choreographer Gaurav Bhatti and Kathak artist Aamrapali Bhandari lead audiences on a journey through solos and a duet that explore the energies of Shiva and Shakti, merging classical storytelling with contemporary expression.
In an era when classical dance is in constant conversation with the present, Ekah – One Breath brings together dancer- choreographer Gaurav Bhatti and Kathak artist Aamrapali Bhandhari for a heartfelt exploration of consciousness and energy through movement. The production unfurls in three distinct segments: solo pieces dedicated to Shiva and Shakti, culminating in a duet that contemplates unity and duality.
Gaurav Bhatti, an experienced Kathak and contemporary dancer trained under Saveeta Sharma in Ottawa, Lata Bakalkar in Mumbai, and currently under Aditi Mangaldas in Delhis’ and has performed internationally. His solo, originally choreographed by Mangaldas, is a meditative journey centred on Shiva, exploring the delicate balance between worldly desire and spiritual stillness. Through nuanced expression and layered movement, he bridges the philosophical and the personal.
Aamrapali Bhandari, an accomplished performer, choreographer, and educator, has trained under Guru Rajendra Gangani and was a repertory artist with Drishtikon, led by Aditi Mangaldas. In her solo, she embodies the essence of Parvati, Durga, and Kali, revealing the spectrum of the Divine Feminine, from creative force and nurturing power to courage and transformation. Her approach infuses classical Kathak technique with contemporary emotional resonance, inviting audiences to experience both tradition and innovation.
The evening culminates in Bindu, a duet that examines the interplay of Shiva and Shakti, distinct energies that ultimately converge, questioning whether union is a merging of opposites or the recognition of an underlying oneness. The choreography alternates between tension and release, reflecting the cyclical nature of creation and dissolution.
Performed in Hindi and Sanskrit, Ekah – One Breath melds intricate footwork, expressive storytelling, and a contemporary choreographic eye, offering audiences an immersive journey that honours Kathak’s spiritual lineage while pushing its expressive boundaries. The performance is both an invitation to reflect and a celebration of dance as a living, transformative art form.
