Eight Million Reasons: Confronting Anti-Blackness in America’s Schools

Anti-Blackness is foundational to both the historical structuring and contemporary practices of schooling in the United States. In this talk, Dr. Jaleel Howard draws on qualitative research with Black students to examine how anti-Blackness operates within everyday school practices and institutional structures. Framing Black students as knowledge producers rather than passive subjects of analysis, Dr. Howard highlights that Black students offer both incisive analyses of institutional harm and practical pathways toward school transformation. By centering their firsthand accounts, this research illuminates critical implications for educator preparation programs committed to serving historically marginalized student populations

Dr. Jaleel R. Howard is a University of California Chancellor's Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Riverside. He completed his doctorate in Urban Education at UCLA, and before his graduate training he taught middle school English in Houston, Texas. Dr. Howard’s research examinesissues of race, educational equity, and their influence on students’ experiences and outcomes in K-12 schools. His work seeks to identify approaches that enable K–12 schools to more effectively meet the academic and nonacademic needs of Black students and other historically marginalized student groups.
