Edward O’Connell died 12 years ago, at the age of 73. He left behind a box containing 27 objects. Each object tells a story. Audience members choose the order in which the stories are told, and, each night, Edward’s life is reconstructed anew. Edward arrives in New York after 16 sold-out performances at private homes in Los Angeles. Before its LA engagement, Edward played 40 sold-out shows in apartments and galleries across New York City. The play will be performed at bookstores in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, from January 21 to February 24.
Ed Schmidt is best known for three solo shows he wrote and performed for small audiences in non-traditional spaces: The Last Supper, in his Windsor Terrace kitchen and dining room; My Last Play, in his Carroll Gardens book-lined living room; and Our Last Game, in an East Village locker room. Those plays received glowing reviews in many publications, including the New York Times, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, Time Out New York, Village Voice, New York Post, Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek, and the Newark Star-Ledger. His more traditional play, Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting, has been produced at many theaters, including Lookingglass Theater Company, Old Globe, Pasadena Playhouse, and the George Street Playhouse.
