To coincide with a new mapping exhibition at Central Library (from 1st June to 31st July) we are delighted to welcome Chris Fleet, who will be giving this talk.Chris will explore Edinburgh’s past through a carefully chosen sequence of 20 maps, spanning from the 1530s to the present day. Together, they trace the city’s physical growth, revealing how its streets, boundaries and landmarks have evolved over five centuries, alongside a steady expansion in cartographic detail.
Beyond documenting change, these maps offer insight into the society that produced them. Their varying purposes, selective content and intended audiences open a window onto different aspects of life in Edinburgh, highlighting what mapmakers chose to show, or leave out.
The talk also considers how these maps were created and who made them, charting Edinburgh’s emergence, prominence and eventual decline as a centre of map production.
About the Speaker:
Chris Fleet is Map Curator at the National Library of Scotland, where he has worked since 1994. His primary responsibilities have been with digital maps and the Library’s maps website.
