Title: From Participation to Co-Creation: Inclusive Research Through Participatory Photography with Amazigh Women in Morocco
Speakers: Mr. Tom Martin and Ms. Michelle Walsh, Lincoln School of Design and Architecture
Abstract:
This roundtable explores participatory photography as a model for inclusive research grounded in co-creation, dialogue, and collective knowledge production. Drawing on an ongoing project with Amazigh women in Morocco, the work positions participants not as subjects of research but as co-researchers shaping both the questions and the outcomes.
Through collaborative image-making, storytelling, and dialogue, participants document lived experiences of climate change, water scarcity, and shifting rural livelihoods. The project foregrounds local knowledge and lived expertise, challenging traditional research hierarchies and opening space for more equitable knowledge production.
The roundtable will reflect on practical approaches to inclusive research, including co-creation methods, ethical considerations, language and cultural mediation, and the role of visual storytelling in generating insight and advocacy.
Tom Martin is a photographer, educator, and participatory project practitioner whose work uses collaborative visual storytelling to address humanitarian and environmental issues. He has led award-winning international research projects with marginalised communities in post-conflict and climate-affected regions including Rwanda, South Sudan, and Bangladesh, influencing national policy through participatory approaches.
His photography has been published in The Economist, The Independent, Italian Vogue, and The Lancet, and exhibited internationally, including solo shows in Westminster and Rwanda and the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize at London’s National Portrait Gallery. Tom teaches photography at the University of Lincoln and delivers workshops on participatory visual research at University College London.
Michelle Walsh is a photographer and Senior Lecturer in the School of Design at the University of Lincoln. Her practice is predominantly focused on participatory approaches to image making, guided by the belief that individuals and communities are the foremost authorities on their own experiences and stories. She has over 15 years’ experience delivering participatory photography projects in the UK and internationally, including work with Amazigh women in Morocco focused on climate resilience and peacebuilding in Rwanda. In the UK, her work has included projects with migrant communities exploring social cohesion, people experiencing mental health challenges and wellbeing, young people in supported housing, refugees, and young people engaged in climate policy. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at Frequency Festival, Digitalis Festival, New Art Exchange Nottingham, and Seven Dials, London.
