3-22-26 EDH Sunday dance: Medical Lake, w/ Andy KHello, once again y'all. This message is to invite you to come join us for Ecstatic Dance Houston's Sunday Dance. This week the program is called "Medical Lake.” I'll explain the basic details first, and then share my introduction to the theme.
Ecstatic Dance Houston's Sunday dance follows a long tradition of freestyle dance, with no moves to learn, no steps to memorize. Each person has bodily autonomy during the dance and we are empowering you to shape your own experience in various ways. This is a no-talking dance, where we mostly use body language to communicate. As you shift the frontal cortex away from constantly verbalizing and into creative, expressive movement, we are potentially strengthening our ability to access and express our emotions. At the same time, on another level, we are also just bopping around and having fun, and maybe getting some physical exercise. The music program is designed to guide us on a journey together. This works best if you can stay engaged for the whole dance. We put down our phones for a minute and pay attention to the actual living moment. More explanation of the guidelines will happen at the opening circle.
Ecstatic Dance Houston is always evolving, and here's the pattern we have been on lately:
- 10:00 Doors open for spontaneous volunteers to clean and purify the space. They are mostly parking inside the gate on Hamilton Street, behind Fixed Up Bike Shop.
- 10:30 The Warm-up starts and most people arrive around this time. They are mostly parking along all the streets nearby (except we don't like to park directly in front of the four small houses on Hamilton St.). Please donate at the door to support the dance if you can.
- 11:00 Opening Circle, and the main dance begins now. It lasts for about 80 minutes.
- 12:45 to 1:30 After the dance, we have an optional closing circle and then we have to put the room back to the default placement of the furniture.
- 2:00 All cars out, gates are closing! This is the conclusion of Ecstatic Dance Houston's Sunday dance. There is often an invitation to lunch or a sound bath or other various activities afterward.
Here's what was written about this week's theme, "Medical Lake."
When I was a small child, I lived on a farm near this place in Washington State, where the Native Americans believed the waters of a particular lake had healing properties. Hence the name, Medical Lake. Sometimes people would travel from faraway places to swim and soak in the lake. And we liked to swim there, too. I remember visiting this lake, in the summer before I started kindergarten. So the music is an homage to the experience and feeling of that place and time from my early years, and the emotions associated with enjoying a nice day at the lake.
Hope to see you soon, thanks for reading my invitation.
