Years ago in seminary I read a book by N. T. Wright called Surprised by Hope. It may still be the most important Christian book I’ve ever read. Near the end of the book, Wright writes something that has stuck with me ever since:“Easter ought to be an eight-day festival, with champagne served after morning prayer or even before, with lots of alleluias and extra hymns and spectacular anthems. Is it any wonder people find it hard to believe in the resurrection of Jesus if we don’t throw our hats in the air? Is it any wonder we find it hard to live the resurrection if we don’t do it exuberantly in our liturgies?”
We took that idea seriously.
So next week, after our sunrise service and before our regular worship service, we’re throwing a feast. A proper brunch. A smorgasbord.
We need you to bring your very best brunch dishes to share. (For the record, my biscuits and gravy will already be the best thing there—but the rest of you are welcome to compete for second place.) Legend will bring the champagne, the orange juice, and the drinks. We’ll have all the serving supplies ready and more than enough tables to hold a proper feast.
All we need is you—and your best dish.
Easter is how we remind the world that the darkness does not win. That the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. That new creation has already begun.
And Christians have always celebrated that the same way:
With food.
With laughter.
With song.
With tables full of people who are glad to be alive in God’s good world.
So come hungry.
Bring something good.
And let’s celebrate the resurrection the way it deserves to be celebrated.
We can’t wait to see you there.
