Where is Loch Quoich (more recently named Loch Cuaich)?
Loch Quoich (or Loch Cuaich) is a loch and reservoir approximately 40 km northwest of Fort William, Lochaber, Scotland. When travelling to Glen Shiel from Fort William along the A82, you'll turn off onto the A87 at Invergarry.
Before you come to the famous Loch of Scotland (Loch Garry itself), there's an almost imperceptible turn off toward Kinlochhourne.
Loch Cuaich can be found about 22km along this single track road with passing places. The name means "loch of the quaich". The original loch was expanded to form part of the Glen Garry hydroelectricity project completed in 1962.
Once you pass the dam after what seems like an age of driving (carefully!), you might as well be in a different time zone. There are mountains in all directions surrounding the loch (including the famous South Glen Shiel Ridge - to our north down here). The trees seem to exist straight out of the Jurassic. It's a wonderful place.
About the Adventure:
There are 4 Munros on offer. On clear days, one can see out to sea and across to the Isle of Skye or into Knoydart.
These mountains are relatively straight forward but trackless in places. Gairich in particular can be boggy with a rocky step higher up.. The intention is to bag Gairich on one day, Spidean Mialach and Gleouraich the next, and the half day Sgurr a' Mhaoraich on the final day. It is possible to combine the latter with Gairich with a drive between them, but that's weather and group dependent!
Munros
Gairich (919m / 3,051ft)
Spidean Mialach (996m / 3,268ft)
Gleouraich (1,035m / 3,396ft)
Sgurr a' Mhaoraich (1,027m / 3,369ft)
Should you wish to only join for one, two or all three of the days there is the option - Please note that I cannot guarantee which day we will attempt the Munros of interest to you as this will be weather dependent.
