Join Nature at McMaster in restoring a brand-new wetland project at McMaster West Campus!
About this Event

The new marsh at McMaster west campus is just missing one thing before it's ready for wildlife to move in this spring: plants! Join Nature at McMaster as we plant beautiful native wetland plants, boosting biodiversity and supporting wildlife in the process. Keep an eye out for unique local wetland animals during this event!

Event Details:

  • Date: Tuesday, April 21, 2026
  • Time: 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm
  • Location: Meet at the shuttle turnaround at Parking Lot P on McMaster's West Campus. Nature at McMaster staff will lead you to the planting site. If you arrive late, please follow the trail marked with an arrow on the map to the planting site location and find a Nature at McMaster staff to sign in.

Activities:

  • Planting: we will plant native wildflowers and shrubs to create vibrant habitat around the new ponds at West Campus!
  • Invasive Plant Removal: we will remove non-native European Buckthorn shrubs that are crowding out native species and degrading the habitat around our vernal ponds.

Bring/Wear:

  • Comfortable, closed-toe, durable shoes (mud proof if you have any)
  • Long pants and long socks
  • Ensure you wear clothing and shoes that you will not mind getting dirty
  • Water bottles
  • Sunscreen/Hat/Sunglasses
  • Bug spray

Nature at McMaster will provide all the tools and plants necessary for this event.

Accessibility Notes:

  • There are no washrooms available on site. The nearest washrooms are at the Mary Keyes Residence.
  • We will be working in muddy, uneven terrain.
  • Planting trees may require kneeling on the ground and other physically taxing activities. We encourage attendees to consider pairing up with another event attendee and dividing roles (for example, one person digs holes and the other person plants the plants and fills in the holes).
  • If you are unsure how to use any of the tools provided, please ask any Nature at McMaster staff in attendance and we would be happy to assist you.
  • If you feel unwell at any point during the event, please inform a Nature at McMaster staff member immediately.
  • If you have any accessibility questions or concerns, please let us know and we will be sure to address them to the best of our ability. You can email us at [email protected].
