About this Event

Earth Day – Vernal Pond Workday

This earthday come get your hands dirty while helpping protect a rare wetland... April 18, 2026 at 10:00 AM (EDT).

We’ll be caring for a nearby vernal pond—small, seasonal wetlands that fill with snowmelt and spring rain, then gradually dry out by mid-to-late summer. Because they don’t hold water year-round, vernal ponds typically lack fish, making them critical breeding grounds for amphibians like salamanders and frogs, as well as habitat for turtles, migratory birds, pollinators, and countless invertebrates. These quiet, temporary pools are biodiversity hotspots—nurseries of the forest floor that help sustain the wider Rouge River ecosystem.

Invasive plant species threaten this delicate balance. Fast-growing, non-native plants can crowd out native wildflowers and shrubs, alter soil chemistry, reduce sunlight at ground level, and degrade the quality of breeding habitat for wildlife. Removing invasive species helps native plants rebound, improves water infiltration, and protects the ecological integrity of the pond and surrounding floodplain.

During this workday, we’ll work together to carefully remove invasive plants around the pond, support native regeneration, and learn more about the unique ecology of vernal wetlands. No experience is needed—just bring your enthusiasm, sturdy shoes, and clothes you don’t mind getting a little muddy. Gloves and tools will be provided.

Come connect with community, celebrate Earth Day with purpose, and help steward one of Rouge Park’s rare and remarkable spring ecosystems. We hope to see you there!
