Join us as we celebrate the Earth and learn about ways you can invest in our planet to create a brighter future! Watch live animal programs, take part in hands-on activities, join a behind the scenes tour, or talk to vendors to learn how you can take action to make eco-friendly choices all year long!Guests will have the opportunity to engage with community partners, VLM staff, and VLM volunteers about ways they can make more environmentally-friendly choices. Guests can learn about the VLM’s upcoming conservation activities at the Conservation Table and learn about other opportunities in the Hampton Roads area by visiting our community partner tables. Live animal programs, science shows, and activities led by Green Teens and Conservation Club will allow guests to get an up-close look at the wildlife who share our planet and experience hands-on activities about protecting our planet.
Give Away to Give Back
Join us in celebrating Earth Day by donating your old or unused items to be recycled or repurposed at the VLM! Drop off donations in labeled blue bins near the front desk—no admission required. Volunteers will be available to assist.
We’re collecting:
Clean towels, sheets, blankets, and washcloths (no holes, no metal accents, no fitted sheets) for animal care
Large nursery pots (12″ or larger, no cracks) for hides for fish & reptiles
Clean PVC pipes and fittings (no cracks) for fish & reptile hides
Oven mitts (no holes) for small snakes’ enrichment
Clean newspapers
Recycling Opportunities
We can only accept these items on Saturday, April 19th from 10am-3pm.
Collecting used but clean athletic shoes (any brand; no sandals, dress shoes, boots, or shoes with metal like cleats or spikes) for recycling with Nike’s Reuse-a-Shoe program – we will arrange a drop off to recycle these shoes, they won’t be used at the museum
Collecting plastic bags for Trex recycling. Bags must be clean, dry, have no food residue, and be on the list of acceptable items (plastic wrap and stretchy plastic film, grocery bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves, dry cleaning bags, sandwich-type single-use plastic bags, produce bags, and bubble wrap).
