Early Years Assessment: Strengthening Practice, Accuracy, and Confidence 1

This workshop is for Coventry Early Years school staff and is suitable for ECTs, those staff new to Early Years or anyone who would like further guidance, support and professional conversations around assessment in the Early Years in schools.

These are DfE funded LA facilitated EYFSP assessment sessions which will facilitate EYFSP assessment support by sharing best practice, building practitioner confidence, and promoting consistent assessment by addressing misconceptions.

This practical, interactive training course is designed to deepen staff understanding of early years assessment and build confidence in making accurate, meaningful judgements about children’s learning.

The course includes a clear focus on the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile (EYFSP), supporting staff to understand expectations, apply the statutory framework effectively, and use professional judgement with assurance and consistency.

Key Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, participants will:

• Develop a secure understanding of the principles of assessment in the EYFS.
• Understand expectations for the EYFSP, including early learning goals, judgements, and moderation principles.
• Build confidence in applying professional judgement without over‑reliance on excessive evidence.
• Have opportunities for shared moderation and reflective discussion.
• Identify strategies to streamline assessment processes to reduce workload and increase impact.
• Learn how to use assessment to shape provision, inform planning, and support children’s next steps.

Course Format:
A mix of:

• Facilitated discussions
• Moderation-style group tasks
• Reflection on current practice and action-planning for improvement
• Guidance and resources to take back into school

Please bring examples of children’s writing and Maths work along with any other notes or records which you would find helpful.

There will be 2 sessions on offer. Staff only need to attend one of the sessions.
