About this Event
Come listen to Jet and Max talk about the book, the film, and Sydney's underground. Hear their stories about train lines, tunnels, drains, and rooftops, and have your copy of Off the Rails signed. Then, come walk the streets through Ménilmontant for a photo walk; phone cameras are encouraged. The best photo from the evening wins a 35mm film camera. When we arrive back at Le Grand Jeu we will then watch the first European screening of Max's documentary These City Circles with a closing panel after. Drinks and food will be provided throughout.
About the work
Off the Rails is Jet Williams's debut novel. After a fifteen-year-old boy discovers a graffiti blackbook, his eyes are opened to the unseen world of Sydney. He runs active train tunnels. Scales rooftops. Breaks into abandoned buildings. In the city's forgotten spaces he finds a community who see Sydney the way he does - not as a place to live, but as a place of immense beauty, above and below. When his search for belonging gets mistaken for rebellion, he's forced to question everything.
These City Circles is Max Dona's short documentary on the same world from behind the lens. Paris is its first European screening.
Presented with Le Grand Jeu. Supported by Creative Australia, and friends of the project.
