About this Event
Most of us have questions about death.
We just do not usually ask them out loud.
So — this event is here to change that.
Join us at the Thirsty Devil for a relaxed, slightly unconventional evening where death is not taboo — it is simply part of the conversation.
This is not a lecture or a seminar.
It is a social night where you can wander the space, enjoy food and drinks, and chat with professionals who work in the world of death, dying, and end-of-life care.
Ask them anything. For example:
- How do funerals actually work?
- What does a death doula do?
- What really happens when someone dies?
- How is someone cremated?
- What happens if someone dies at home?
- What is the strangest request you have seen for a funeral?
- How do you talk to family about dying?
Nothing is off limits.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Before I Die Wall – share your thoughts, wishes, or wild ideas about life before it ends.
- Roaming Experts – funeral directors, grief specialists, death doulas, and other end-of-life professionals will be wandering the space. Pick their brains — ask anything!
- Storytelling Pop-Up: Life, Death & the Odd (very odd) Moments – share your strangest, funniest, or quirkiest stories about death or end-of-life experiences. The strangest story with a show of hands wins a bottle of champagne.
- Death Photo Booth – snap a silly, dramatic, or playful picture with themed props.
- Lucky Door Prize – every attendee receives a ticket on arrival. At the end of the night, one lucky person takes home a prize.
Food and drinks will be available throughout the evening.
The atmosphere is casual, curious, and fun. You are welcome to participate in everything, or just observe. Laugh, learn, ask questions - and feel safe to do so.
TICKETS
General Admission
Tickets are available for the general public who are curious about death, dying, and the conversations we often avoid.
End-of-Life Professionals
If you work in a death-related field (funeral services, wills and estates, veterinary services, palliative care, grief support, death doula work, etc.) and would like to attend, please send an email to .
If you are happy to attend as a roaming expert on the night — chatting with guests and answering questions — your ticket fee will be waived - with food and drinks on me!
This event is about bringing together people who are curious with people who work in this space, so the more open conversations we can have in safe, playful spaces, the better.
About Me
Hi, I am Kara Chanter — palliative care nurse, end-of-life doula, funeral celebrant, and loss & grief coach. I have spent 13 years in palliative care, supporting people and families - and I am AHPRA registered as a nurse.
I hold a psychology degree and have completed extensive training in death and grief work, including:
- End-of-life doula training with Denise Love and Zenith Virago
- Loss & grief training with The National Centre for Childhood Grief
- Funeral celebrant training with The Funeral Fix
- Speaker at the inaugural TEDx Albury event — watch the talk here
I created my sole trader space - Dying to help because I want to make conversations about death, dying, grief, and loss relaxed, human, and a little fun. Whether you are curious, nervous, or just want to ask the weird questions no one else will, this event, and what I do - is a safe event to explore, learn, and laugh.
And yes — I do occasionally talk to strangers about death just for fun.
