D!VE’s focus on shattering statues originated from the idea that these figures monumentalised societies and their achievements. Despite many of these figures being tyrannical warriors, vengeful Gods and frightening Devils, when you look at these meticulously carved marble statues and busts today, there is a sense of prominence that makes the viewer reflect on the greatness of that civilisation. Presenting these statues as shattering objects frozen at the most visually engaging moment of their destruction, creates a different sense of prominence from looking at these beautifully carved marble statues of warlords, dictators and leaders blowing up, asks the viewer to reflect on todays society and our own ‘greatness’.
