The Kyiv-based Duo Vyriy, featuring Maltese saxophonist Carlo Muscat and Ukrainian pianist Olena Poguliaieva, was formed to offer a unique cross-cultural lens on Ukrainian classical music. Guided by Poguliaieva’s deep understanding of the repertoire and Muscat’s interpretive approach as an outsider, the duo brings a fresh perspective and renewed vitality to the works of exceptional Ukrainian composers.
Vyriy represents a mythical land of eternal warmth and light—a symbol of peace, harmony, and transcendence. The duo draws on this powerful imagery, translating it into music that bridges cultures while celebrating the richness of Ukrainian heritage. Through their interpretations of both traditional and contemporary works, they honour the past, embrace dialogue, and illuminate new paths forward for this timeless music.
