On Wednesday 13 August, Dub Me Always is pleased to welcome the return of veteran south London sound system Coxon Jnr, with selector Gary Coxon and mic man, DJ Gerry, playing original reggae vinyl and unknown dub plates alongside the night’s regular host, DJ David Katz.Coxon Jnr ‘the Vinyl Gatekeeper’ has music in his blood. The son of the legendary sound system giant Lloydie Coxon of Sir Coxson Outernational, Coxon Jnr grew up with crew members Festus, Gunsmoke and Castro Brown as his uncles, accompanying his father from an early age to events at the Georgian nightclub in East Croydon and Columbo’s in the West End (formerly the Roaring Twenties), where Sir Coxson enjoyed a long residency. Born and raised in south London, during his youth Coxon Jnr joined the Battersea-based Satellite sound which later became Young Lion. Then he and a friend launched Specta Hi-Fi, which became Coxon Jnr in 1977; the sound won the SW London Youth Sound System Clash held at the Providence House Youth Club in Clapham Junction in 1982. Other early experience was gained at the Clouds club (formerly the Ram Jam), opposite Brixton police station, where the resident TWJ sound was run by BBC Radio DJ Tony Williams and his brothers. Making regular trips to Jamaica from the early 1970s, and with widespread connections throughout the reggae underground, Coxon Jnr established personal friendships with esteemed artists such as Dennis Brown and Delroy Wilson, granting him access to exclusive material, which he has made regular use of in the decades the followed.
