Drishti Yoga is a powerful Tantric practice that uses the gaze – outward or inward – to cultivate concentration (dharana) and meditation (dhyana).
In asana and pranayama, drishti refers to specific focal points such as the tip of the nose, the third eye, or the thumb.
The principle is simple: where the eyes go, attention follows.
Trataka
One of the main techniques in Drishti Yoga is Trataka, steady gazing at a fixed point – commonly a candle flame, yantra, flower, or internal focus like the third eye or chakras. This practice connects the eyes and mind, calming stray thoughts and preparing for deeper meditation.
Trataka is accessible to all levels and offers variations, from external gazing to internal visualisation of deities, yantras, or elemental forms.
The effects of trataka are wide-reaching.
Physically, it strengthens the eyes, improves vision, and relaxes the nervous system.
Mentally, it sharpens concentration, memory, and self-awareness while reducing stress, anxiety, and insomnia.
Spiritually, it activates the third eye, enhances intuition, and prepares the mind for deeper meditation.
