Join us for a unique hands-on workshop where you’ll create a stunning dried flower bouquet and learn about Mizuhiki, the Japanese traditional art. Mizuhiki are decorative cords with various colors made from tightly twisted washi paper. Although Mizuhiki has traditionally been used in gift wrapping, celebrations, and symbolic ornaments to express good fortune or wishes, it has also recently become popular for accessories, interior decor, and fashion.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make one of the most popular Japanese knots with delicate Mizuhiki cords—a possible creation is a butterfly, symbolizing transformation and new beginnings.
For the dried flower bouquet, we’ll be working with a beautiful mix of greens, including preserved greens and fresh greens that dry wonderfully over time. You can also add a pop of color of your choice to personalize your bouquet and make it uniquely yours!
Your Mizuhiki piece can be:
✨ Assembled into your bouquet for a unique finishing touch
✨ Attached outside the bouquet for a separate accent
✨ Kept as a standalone decorative piece
All materials will be provided, and no prior experience is necessary. Whether you love floral design, Japanese craftsmanship, or simply want to enjoy a creative afternoon, this workshop is for you!
*すべての材料はご用意しており、初心者の方も安心してご参加いただけます。フラワーデザインや日本の工芸に興味のある方、ものづくりが好きな方にぴったりのワークショップです!皆様のご参加お待ちしております。
📩 Limited spots available—reserve yours today!
*Please note that the images you see are just examples—what you create may look totally different based on your own preferences and creativity!
WORKSHOP FACILITATOR DETAILS
Instructor: Hijiri Shepherd
Hijiri owns and designs at Heartfish Press (http://www.heartfishpress.com), a studio located in Brooklyn, NY, specializing in letterpress printing and floral design. The studio offers a variety of letterpress prints, cards, and custom design services that involve creating floral designs using dried flowers.
Hijiri studied graphic design in Tokyo and pursued art direction at a university in San Francisco. After completing her studies, she worked as an art director at an advertising agency. In 2008, she moved to New York City and started working as a freelance designer. It was during this time that she discovered her passion for letterpress printing and the joy of crafting handmade items, which motivated her to establish her own business. Recently, Hijiri has been devoting a lot of her creative energy to exploring the art of dried flower arrangement, and she has developed a deep love for this craft along the way.
Instructor: Satoi Adams
Satoi is a Mizuhiki artist from Mizuhiki Global Links based in both Tokyo and NY(www.mizuhikigloballinks.com). She
creates designs that incorporate the traditional Japanese craft of Mizuhiki into fashion and interior decor, and leads workshops at various locations, including her homes in Manhattan and Tokyo, as well as at schools and organizations.
Satoi began her career in broadcasting after studying Japanese linguistics at university. Living abroad gave her a new perspective on Japan's cultural value and the greater power of visual expressions over language. Since 2018, she has promoted Mizuhiki through workshops in Japan and the U.S. while also developing programs to support cognitive function in seniors and children.
