Drawing Out The Monastery is a 12-month Manchester Monastery residency which will culminate as an exhibition and performance, a new immersive artwork which will act as a stage for a music presentation – and we’d love you to join us.Sept 29th – October 3rd, 2024
ABOUT THE PROJECT
This project is particularly focused on The Monastery as a site in reference to a sense of belonging and history, utilising drawing, walking and song making processes. The Drawing Out The Monastery performance will act as a way of interpreting and presenting the drawing as a one-off performance event.
Drawing is central to Simon Woolham’s practice and graphite rubbing, a traditional process of taking brass rubbings in churches. It is utilised to engage with layers of time and space, heightening multitudes of histories, textures of narrative through seams of investigation.
ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE
The performance will be a collaboration between Simon’s band L.A.S.H., Gorton Voice Choir and The Monastery’s organ player, Stephen Mann. For the unveiling performance, a series of songs will be presented as a way of interpreting the drawing, heightening the narrative and the processes and experiences involved in building the artwork.
KEY DATES
The unveiling of the Drawing Out The Monastery exhibition and the performance will be on Sunday 29th September 2024, 2-4pm with the performance at 3pm.
The Drawing Out The Monastery exhibition will be on until Thursday 3rd October, 2024, 10am-4pm.

Participants can expect an immersive visual and music experience and the audience will benefit from engaging with drawing and music in relation to the textural histories of The Monastery.
