About this Event
How does a cartoonist adapt a scholarly work of history, specifically Eric H. Cline’s 1177 BC: The Year Civilization Collapsed? In this talk, award-winning illustrator Glynnis Fawkes will describe the process of interpreting Eric’s text in comics. This meant making historical figures (such as Ramses III) speak, as well as imagining characters for whom we have no record offering commentary and opinions. is professor of classics and anthropology at George Washington University. His many books include 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed and After 1177 B.C.: The Survival of Civilizations (both Princeton).
is the author-illustrator of Charlotte Brontë before Jane Eyre and Persephone’s Garden, among other books, and her comics have appeared on the website ofThe New Yorker. She has worked as an archaeological illustrator around the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, and teaches at the Center for Cartoon Studies in Vermont.
(he/him), is director and associate professor of the Graduate Program in Publishing, College of Professional Studies, George Washington University. He has authored numerous articles on digital publishing and innovation.
