This introductory course aims to provide an opportunity to explore the art and science of botanical Illustration. We look at how to draw and paint with water based colour by direct observation of the plant material. We also look at the history of botanical illustration and look at how both style and technique has developed as both the understanding of paint chemistry developed and how an increased understanding of plant science evolved. Styles were also adapted and developed according to the demand for botanical illustration. From kings who grew fine roses to the plant seedsman and herbalist.
The course is taught by a practicing artist who has a background in the science of botany and the practice of fine art.
Students are asked to bring their own essential equipment and materials such as a sketch book and pencils and paints. Other materials are provided together with samples of reference materials e.g Keble Martins Illlustrations of British Flora.
All are welcome no experience needed. This is a small class and provides a supportive and relaxed environment in which to draw.
Places are limited so booking is required.
Fee for the entire course is £125/110 concessions
