Drawing from Nature: Exploring New England Flora

Botanist & landscape designer, Lauren Meier, introduces botanical artists to the diversity of New England plant life through a combination of lectures, plant identification, and field sketching. We will cover New England plant communities, distinguishing native/invasive/cultivated plants, tools for plant identification, and field documentation. A new aspect of this course will be creating an accordion sketchbook and a field trip to Garden in the Woods (Native Plant Trust).
Prerequisite: Introduction to Botany through Drawing. This class is a CBA Certificate requirement.
Instructed by Lauren Meier
Lauren Meier is a botanical artist and landscape architect. She received a BA in Botany from Pomona College and a Masters in Landscape Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. She worked as a field botanist and plant ecologist before specializing in historic landscape preservation, and has published many articles, contributed to several books, and frequently lectures on topics related to landscape preservation and restoration, treatment of plant material, and the work of the Olmsted Firm. Meier is currently completing a Certificate in Botanical Art and Illustration at Massachusetts Horticultural Society where she combines her specific interest in the interrelationship between science and art.
