Step into a world of bold colour, playful shapes, and expressive line in this hands-on printmaking workshop inspired by Henri Matisse and presented alongside the Picasso, Matisse, and Gilot exhibition 'Deux Hommes et une Femme (Two Men and a Woman)' at CAN.Date: Saturday 23 May 2026
Time: 9.30am – 12.30pm
Location: Creative Arts Napier
Tutor: Lisa Feyen (Ink Moth Print Studio)
Level: Beginners and those with some printmaking experience (16+)
About the Workshop:
We’ll begin by spending time with Matisse’s vibrant prints in the exhibition, looking closely at how he used line, colour, and simplified forms to create striking compositions.
Back in the studio, you’ll take a pair of scissors to coloured paper and start “drawing” in a whole new way — cutting shapes that feel spontaneous, lively, and uniquely your own. These paper cut-outs will become the foundation for your print as we explore balance, rhythm, and composition.
You’ll then translate your designs into a lino block ready for carving. Along the way, you’ll learn how to:
-Confidently use lino tools
-Ink your block
-Print using the CAN etching press
Experimentation & Play:
The magic really happens when we start layering - printing in different colours and experimenting with unexpected combinations to create rich, dynamic results. We’ll also combine collage and printmaking by gluing your cut paper shapes onto printmaking paper, then printing over the top to create one-of-a-kind artworks.
This workshop is all about experimentation, play, and letting go of perfection. Whether you’re new to printmaking or looking to loosen up your creative process, you’ll leave with a collection of joyful prints - and a fresh way of seeing shape, colour, and composition.
Come ready to cut, carve, print, and play! ✂️
