Throughout the summer, the Museum has spotlighted opportunities to explore Asian cultural influences in our region. On Saturday, August 23, we invite you to join us for a special day trip to the Drala Mountain Center (formerly the Shambhala Mountain Center). The center is a 600-acre retreat nestled in the Colorado Rockies, known for its programs in meditation, mindfulness, and contemplative arts, and it is also home to the striking Great Stupa of Dharmakaya.Our Volunteer and Collections Manager, Sam Hensley, will accompany the group and offer insights throughout the experience. Sam recently completed a master’s degree in Art History at CU Boulder, with a focus on East Asian and Pre-Columbian art. Sam will provide thoughtful context on Tibetan Buddhist architecture, iconography, and the role of pilgrimage, exploring how these traditions are expressed in this unique Colorado setting.
Participants will also enjoy a lunch prepared by the dedicated staff and volunteers at the Mountain Center. Drala Mountain Center requests that guests provide dietary preferences, emergency contact information, and any relevant medical details in advance for safety purposes.
The outing will be hosted by Daniel and Alice Owen and will begin at 9:30 AM at the Harmony Park & Ride (NW corner off I-25 at Exit 265, Harmony Road/CO 68). We will depart promptly at 10:00 AM, with an expected return by 4:00 PM.
Fee: $70 per person
