Dragged Up formed in Glasgow late 2018. Comprising of Eva Gnatiuk (guitar + vocals), with Simon Shaw (guitar + vocals), Stephen Mors (drums) and Lauren Peters (bass + backing vocals), they deftly blend garage-psych, noise rock, proto-punk, and post-doom. Live sets are described as ‘expert’, embodying punk energy, ‘tight AF and with grooves inescapable’.
They have gained admiration from John Dieterich (Deerhoof ), Charles Moothart (Fuzz / Ty Segall Band), Jim Smith (Nightingales) and Stephen Malkmus (Pavement) - with whose band, The Hard Quartet, they toured in 2025 for 10 dates across the UK and EU.
They have released two albums, an EP and three singles, garnering acclaim from The Wire, SNACK Scotland, Record Collector and Louder Than War, and airplay on Stuart Maconie’s Freak Zone, numerous Louder Than War radio shows, Radio Free Brooklyn, KEXP and WFMU.
They have opened for Acid Mothers Temple, Smote, The Vaselines, White Hills, The Bevis Frond, No Age, Bo Ningen, British Birds, HOUSE oF ALL, Party Dozen, Charles Moothart and Water Damage.
A new single is being released in June, and their new album is due out in September 2026 - which will have a vinyl release in Canada on Label Obscura, and on cassette in the UK on Cruel Nature Records.
'When the band hits their stride, they’re unstoppable...’ - SNACK Scotland
‘Riding a relentless wave of restless creativity and blessed with a punishing knack for chaos and groove’ - Fran Carlyon, Heavy Metal Kids
‘There’s bags of attitude here, loose and slovenly one moment, tight and geometric the next.’ - Johnnie Johnston, Record Collector
‘Like classic CBGBs proto-punk transplanted to rain-drenched Scottish streets’ - Iain Key, Louder Than War
‘Their arty slack-punk attack has roots in the anorak era, but displays a much scummier surface than any of those poppers ever managed. Loose loud psych guitar gets woven into vocals with a certain paisley heft, but it’s all presented without cliches. Very, very cool’ - Byron Coley, The Wire
‘It’s less a case of them sounding like this band or that band, and more about the way they distil these various zetigeists and amalgamate them into a magnificent alt-rock hybrid which sounds like so much that’s gone before, and at the same time completely unique’ - Christopher Nosnibor, Aural Aggravation
--------
Alex Rex is the ghost-folk project of Alex Neilson (Trembling Bells, Bonnie Prince Billy, Shirley Collins). Singing songs of love, loss & loathing.
“Superb” The Times
