About this Event
Have you ever been to a gig at Top Rank Ballroom, the Hummingbird, the Academy or the Forum or wondered what goes on behind closed doors? If so, join us for a behind-the-scenes tour of this legendary Birmingham venue that has played host to the likes of Steel Pulse, Kraftwerk, Nirvana and Slade.
Designed by renowned modernist architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, architect of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and Harlow New Town and who studied in the city, the complex was conceived as a comprehensive redevelopment that set the standard for retail design in Birmingham and elsewhere. The gradient of the site allowed for a new shopping precinct beneath which was built a parking garage and two-storey ballroom, now The Forum.
Photographer David Rowan and architect Mike Dring will be running two tours during the day where you’ll hear about the building’s history and have a detailed look at the interior of The Forum and exterior of Priory Square and connected architecture. There will also be an opportunity to buy limited edition items related to the city’s modernist architecture. Income from ticket sales will be donated to the Save Smallbrook campaign.
