About this Event
Join us for this tour to learn about the 19th and early 20th century Jewish community in Charlottesville. What brought Jews to this southern community? What were their experiences like? Were they able to adhere to religious practices and traditions? Learn the stories of those who participated in economic development, cultural life, political developments, and even obtained items requested by Thomas Jefferson for his needs.
Phyllis K. Leffler, UVA Professor Emerita and ACHS Board President, is an expert in local Charlottesville Jewish history. She co-published the exhibit catalog titled “To Seek the Peace of the City: Jewish Life in Charlottesville,” and is immediate past president of the Southern Jewish Historical Society.
Tour will begin on the steps of Congregation Beth Israel.
