About this Event

🍩 Doughnut Design for Business™

From Doughnut Economics to organisational strategy

Doughnut Design for Business™ is a facilitated workshop that helps organisations move from inspiration to implementation.

Using the globally recognised Doughnut Economics framework, teams explore how their organisation can thrive by meeting social needs while operating within ecological limits, and what this means in practice for strategy, culture, operations, and organisational resilience.

Doughnut Design for Business™ is an official, practitioner-led workshop tool of Doughnut Economics Action Lab (DEAL), developed in response to growing demand from organisations seeking practical ways to apply Doughnut Economics thinking inside real business contexts.

🌍 Why Ecological Limits Matter for Business

The Planetary Boundaries framework - which underpins the Doughnut’s ecological ceiling - shows that climate change is only one of nine Earth-system boundaries, with seven already in overshoot.

This points to a broader operating context in which climate, resource use, and social factors increasingly interact in ways organisations are seeking to understand in relation to risk, resilience, and long-term viability.

Doughnut Design for Business™ supports organisations to engage with these realities as strategic and operational considerations.

It is a hands-on, collaborative design process focused on real ecological and social considerations, constraints, and future possibilities.

💡 What the Workshop Does

Using DEAL’s authorised Doughnut Design for Business™ methodology, participants work together to:

  • Understand Doughnut Economics as a 21st-century compass for organisations
  • Explore social shortfall and ecological overshoot, and how the organisation relates to the Doughnut’s social foundation and ecological ceiling
  • Examine how purpose, governance, ownership, finance, and incentives shape what change is possible, using the Five-Layered Deep Design of Business framework
  • Generate ambitious, organisation-specific ideas for becoming more regenerative and distributive by design, in line with the principles of Doughnut Economics.

Sessions can be tailored to support sustainability strategy, ESG conversations, leadership development, innovation, or culture change.

💬 What Teams Gain

Teams leave with Doughnut-specific insight and capability, including:

  • A shared understanding of how planetary boundaries and social foundations reshape organisational success
  • Fluency in regenerative and distributive thinking, and how this differs from green-growth approaches
  • Greater confidence navigating 21st-century ecological, social, and economic considerations
  • Strategic insight into where current business design may be enabling - or constraining - emerging economic alternatives and organisational expectations

Rather than another disconnected initiative, Doughnut Design for Business™ provides a coherent framework for action already being used by cities, communities, and organisations globally.
