Doug Aitken: UNDER THE SUN

What does it mean to be human in an age of constant change? ‘UNDER THE SUN’ by Doug Aitken invites you to step into a landscape of light, sound, and material - a three-part journey that traces our relationship with nature, technology, and time itself.

Spread across three floors, the exhibit unfolds through tactile sculptures, mirrored film environments, and radiant light installations. The Past evokes elemental terrains through wood, glass, and textiles. The Present immerses viewers in Aitken’s six-screen video installation NEW ERA, where shifting reflections and voices explore how technology reshapes connection and identity. The Future culminates in a vast, glowing orb of light - a hypnotic, ever-changing symbol of evolution and possibility.

One of the most influential contemporary artists of his generation, Doug Aitken is known for transforming museums, landscapes, and architectural spaces into multi-sensory experiences. From wrapping the exterior of MoMA in moving images in Sleepwalkers (2007) to building mirrored houses in the desert for Mirage (2017–2021), his works invite viewers to see the world and themselves anew. In his NMACC showcase, Aitken reimagines the Art House, where every encounter with art becomes a mirror of our collective experience and a meditation on what lies ahead.

Curated by Mafalda Kahane and Roya Sachs, and co-produced by Elizabeth Edelman Sachs, partners of the international creative house TRIADIC, the exhibition presents multiple site-specific commissions, many of which are the result of a two-year collaboration between Aitken’s studio and Indian artisans across the country. This blending of local craftsmanship with Aitken’s visionary practice makes the interaction unique.

Step ‘UNDER THE SUN’ and discover a world in flux - grounded in the handmade, expanded by the digital, and illuminated by the infinite.

Entry to this exhibition is free for senior citizens, children under the age of 7, and students of fine arts and media. Book your free ticket online.
