Join Lansing Rent is Too Damn High for a double feature documentary screening of This is Parkdale and Pave the Way: They Even Took the Dirt, Weds. Feb. 26th starting at 6 pm. Movie snacks will be provided, and a discussion of the films will follow. This is Parkdale: In 2017, in the Toronto neighborhood of Parkdale, over 300 tenants living across 12 apartment buildings went on rent strike to protest a wave of rent increases that would have displaced members of their community. Through organizing, working-class people took on the biggest landlord in their neighborhood and won. The story of the Parkdale rent strike offers an important and practical lesson on how we can organize with our neighbors to fight back.
Pave the Way: They Even Took the Dirt: Through interviews and footage, this powerful, locally-produced documentary explores the devastation wrought on a thriving Black neighborhood and business community, as homes and shops were torn down, turning once active streets into dead-ends to make way for Interstate I-496, that would bisect Lansing from east to west for the construction of the highway.
