Double Digits is our brand new community for kids ages 10–14, built as part of the Lily Lake Homeschool Collective around the belief that big kids still need room to play, explore, and create. We built it for the age group that deserves programming designed specifically for them, a place where they can show up as themselves alongside peers who are in the same moment of life, and childhood stays untrammeled a little longer.Ms. Maggie is leading the first Double Digits session this summer with the Short Story Workshop, part of a curriculum called The Power of Words. Nine sessions, Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 2 through June 30, where every student moves from their very first sensory observation all the way through to a bound, illustrated short story they read aloud at the Author's Showcase on June 30.
Students walk away with:
A published short story they wrote, edited, illustrated, and bound themselves
Skills in sensory writing, character development, plot structure, and self-editing
Experience giving and receiving real peer critique
A public reading at the Author's Showcase with family and community in the room
Language for emotions and identity that follows them well beyond the page
